February 18-25, 2011 Municipal Bond and Mutual Funds News – Union busting Protests

municipal bonds

This week (February 18, 2011 – February 25, 2011) saw lots of news about Wisconsin protests spreading to other states. The mutual funds we track were mostly up slightly this week and for the month, fund yields fell slightly. Longer duration mutual funds, both much more than shorter duration mutual funds. This weeks municipal bond news included:

  • More states are seeing protests and picketing to support unions and prevent elimination of collective-bargaining rights and pension cuts. The fact is, pension benefits have to be reined in, or else services need to be cut to the bone and people need to be laid off.(WSJ)
  • High-yield taxable bonds were sold by cash-strapped Illinois. 4.96% for five-year bonds. This $3.7 billion offering was controversial because it’s intended to fund the payment of the states pension plan for the current fiscal year.  Their retirement system is only 43% funded. There was strong investor interest from hedge funds, mutual funds, in non-US buyers, making us feel that greed overpowers logic. (WSJ)
  • WSJ maps each state into how big a budget shortfall it has. The picture is sobering. (WSJ)
